Faraj Al-Dhafiri: Make children’s memories and surround them with books

Writer and person interested in children’s literature, Faraj Al-Dhafiri, stressed to “Al-Riyadh” the importance of creating memories and experiences of children by besieging them with stories, books and magazines, and encouraging them to create a small home library, instilling the value of culture, so that they can be raised on it and live its concept and its implications, noting that the tyranny of the digital revolution created major challenges. In front of the stories and paper magazines, foremost of which is the quality of the content that attracts the child and satisfies the educator, noting its ability to achieve its goals quickly if it captures the attention of children and attracts them to it, and makes them excited about its content. The child’s memories in the stage of building the book, to the dialogue:

  • How do you evaluate the cultural interest in children through Vision 2030?

  • Attention to the child has become very noticeable in recent years, and this reflects the direction of the rational leadership to effectively achieve Vision 2030. On the cultural level, the Ministry of Culture has adopted that culture be a lifestyle, and considered it its first goal, and for culture to be a lifestyle, the beginning is from the child who will be implanted in it. This value is in order for him to be brought up on it, and live with its implications and concept, so his concept of culture is present in his mind, and to reach this result we need to diversify the activities with which the child interacts, and this diversification addresses all the senses of the child and identifies with his emotions, so that we are not limited to one activity such as reading activity only Rather, we go beyond it to activities that attract children, and bring them fun and interest.

  • You headed a children’s magazine.. Tell us about the most important challenges you faced and did you manage to overcome them?

  • Children’s paper magazines are now almost extinct, and I think that this is unhealthy, even with the presence of the digital aspect, the survival of paper magazines for children is a necessity, and talking about my presidency to edit the magazine “Bassem” was before the tyranny of the digital revolution, and the challenges at that time are different from the present time, One of the challenges at that time was the quality of the content that attracts the child and satisfies the educator. Praise be to God, we were able to achieve this balance and overcome this challenge. For the present time: I think it is necessary for children’s magazines to have a greater ability to attract and provide an appropriate distribution network, especially And newspaper distribution companies are currently not in their best condition due to the low demand for paper newspapers.

  • How successful are children’s magazines in passing awareness and educational messages and creating ideals?

  • Children’s magazines can achieve their goals quickly if they can capture children’s interest and attract them, and interest them in their content. The mission of children’s magazines is a great task even at the level of countries. Children’s books are governed by several considerations, including the child’s age stage. Children’s books in the primary grades differ from children’s books in later stages, and they differ from pre-school children’s books, and each stage of childhood has what suits it in terms of content, artistic form, size and material used in the book. Among the considerations: taking into account the interests of the child in choosing the book, and taking into account the child’s desire to choose books, and the role of the guardian in this case is to verify the appropriateness of the book for the child in terms of content and its appropriateness for his age stage.

  • Does writing for the child in the vernacular weaken the role of the family in strengthening the child’s relationship with the book?

  • Writing in general is not acceptable educationally and literary. As for narration, the narrator or storyteller talks about what is close to the children he tells them, and in this case he is able to formulate his phrases in more than one style and cite a synonymous word that he may see as more clear than others, and the home library is very important, as the child Whoever finds in his home a library opens his eyes to the book, and hears his family members talking about books, he is surrounded by books and this is a beautiful siege, and it is important that his memories and experiences with books are completely positive, so he does not punish the child because he destroyed the book, for example, and it is good to encourage the child to establish a library His own little one, because he will take care of it and be proud of what is in it, and all this contributes to strengthening the child’s relationship with the book.

  • What is the impact of digitization on the children’s story industry, and is there a difference between paper and digital browsing?

  • The impact of digitization is great, and it has both positive and negative sides. If we talk on the positive side: digital books do not need space, are not affected by environmental and atmospheric factors, easy access to and handling of the digital product, and lower cost compared to paper, and may contain multiple technologies: Animation On the negative side: using devices for long periods may cause health damage, such as visual fatigue, spinal and nerve problems, and there is a material cost due to changing devices as a result of continuous development, with the risk of devices being damaged by viruses, hacking or Exposure to threats and extortion, in addition to weak censorship of stories spread on the Internet, which results in providing content that is inappropriate for children.

I would like to point out an important issue here, that in the field of education, male and female students – especially in the primary grades – must be closely related to the paper book, and handwriting with the pen.

  • You have a special interest in writing the comics script.. What are the basics of this art and its role in shaping awareness?

  • Comics is a very beautiful world, and it is the mainstay of children’s magazines in the world, and beyond that, comics has become directed to all ages. Therefore, the comics scenario is very close to the movie script, and it focuses on the visual aspect. As for its importance in shaping the awareness of the child, many educators have talked about this, and among the most prominent of what they mentioned: that comics stories remain for a long time, and can develop aesthetic pleasure, and can increase It is stimulating and focused, able to establish a relationship between information and past experiences and new information, allowing learned topics to be translated into real-life situations, can develop reading habits, and improves sense of humor.
